Genre: the style or category of the art, music, or movie. examples: horror, comedy, sci-fi, romcom, drama
Genre is very important to find your target audience and to make a more focused and successful piece of work. a genre is another word for style. the genre is one or more words that categories a piece of work such as a film or music video. genres are implemented within films through multiple methods such as the costumes, themes, conventions, etc. types of genres:
horror, comedy, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, fiction, etc.

this poster clearly demonstrates what the genre of the film is without having an explosion of images or words. simply looking at the colours the graphical texture of the way it looks and the mysterious creepy looking mask shows us that the film is going to be a horror related film along with text font which connotes to what the genre could possibly be as it looks dirty, broken, it changes the normal font to a more interesting and expertised font created solely for this movie and its genre horror.
traditional conventions:
iconography- these are main items that show a purpose within a film such as props, locations, sound effects, costumes. the joker is a perfect example of the iconography convention as anyone who has seen him played in batman or joker will know whats his most unique icon which is his disguise/makeup an even closer look is his smile which has its own story giving joker a icon to be represented by.

narrative- this is another way to see what the main convention is of a film for example; the pulp fiction is a narrative convention as the main purpose or a focus point is the structure and story line. story, structure, character roles, plot points. pulp fiction is a great way to show the narrative convention as its simply a film which includes multiple narratives/stories in one film.

thematic- this is the focus point of an idea, message, binary opposites, juxtaposing etc. maze runner is a great example of a thematic film showing the ideas and themes within the film as the foundation and how it builds up to a juxtaposing final scene of them thinking they are safe but there's more to come. a great way to end on keeping the audience encouraged to watch the second film.

Purpose: the reason for something to be created. when analysing the purpose you could use the 5w and how. For example: who is for?, why choose this idea?, where are you filming?, what are you producing?, when are you planning to film or proceed with your idea? how are you going to accomplish this? this is often implemented into the narrative but can be seen through other methods such as structure, themes and genre
Target audience: this is the specific audience you intend to sell your production too. your target audience is people who would watch your film or work as its their preferred topic or genre. examples: young people, parents, children, business men, etc. are all audiences targeted to their specific films.
USP: unique selling point is one or more aspects which are unique and differentiate your project from other similar projects. for example: A short film could have a rhythmic narrative to differentiate from other competitors and that will explain the USP as it's not a norm to have a rhyming or musical short film but it is a good way to sell your film to a different audience. the usp is achieved through many ways however every film possibly have only one or two methods to help build upon them.
camera production:
single cam- this is any production that uses only one camera to record footage, often used by small productions to minimise costs and risks. examples: music videos, commercial advertisements, game shows, etc.
multi cam- this is the use of multiple cameras one one scene to get multiple angles, performances and perspectives. examples: films, news, sports, music concerts and gigs, etc.
we completed a tutorial in relation to single and multi camera productions. initially we would be doing our projects single cam however if we need support and want to create a multi cam scene or take then this would be great in groups of 2 or more as it makes camera operations much more efficient.
Feminism Theory
feminism is a thought concerned with women's role in society. most renowned example of this is the neglection of women's rights to vote in the last century.
feminism has gone through three waves the first wave began in late 1700's and early 1900's where writers highlighted the inequalities between the sexes and the two other waves came later in time when female rights were beginning to receive more valued.
male lead movies: james bond, terminator, black panther, etc.
female lead roles: tomb raider, moana, thor ragnarok, alien, etc.
movies in the 1900's often portray men as a strong, handsome, and intelligent character from the films and the women a passive, erotised and objectified character this has changed drastically since the early 21st century where women are seen as strong or maybe even stronger than men in some cases they are sexualised however even through this they are seen as good looking and intelligent individuals. this major difference shows the different thoughts people have on men and women of today from a century ago.
questions:
- I'm going to make sure that my final major project doesn't disregard or violate in anyway the opposite gender or any other discouraging uses of language or visuals.
- I don't think this applied to specifics its mainly a common appeal however anyone who differentiates from them can choose as to what they prefer.
- I've included a summary of the activity above showing my understanding on feminism from the presentation.
short film analysis: what's the purpose, who is the target audience, how are the specifics implemented
this is a well created example of how people with anxiety feel. the purpose of this short film is to make people aware of how it feels to have anxiety as well as how to overcome it in some way by believeing its ok to be different. the short film could be simply targeted at any age or gender however we could consider the target audience to be the more grown up and mature audiences for them to understand more of what is going on within the film as well as they are more likely to get the same anxiety or can relate in some way. this short film is very technical as the purpose requires a lot of research about anxiety before completely understanding it as well as the way it has been structured is very technolised with most of the audio done through voiceover and the main element of the clone effect which is created in post production this limits the amount of time to take on each recording however it means that there will be more effort required with planning and time management.
short film comparison:
comparisons:
the two short films are completely different from each other one is trying to entertain and give a morale whilst the other is trying to entertain and scare the audience both are trying to grip their audiences attention shown by the narrative's focus and close relation to their genre and styles. the purposes however are completely different as the first one clearly shows the violent street life and its effects on the people around it. the second one however shows a horror Christmas story. it uses a slogan type cliché which is used as a creepy background sound to scare its audience and show a relation to Christmas. both have one similar thing which is the purpose to entertain you can see this through the music used within the first one and the other one shows the purpose to entertain through its festive type atmosphere which works very well with its target audience as they are expecting some sort of horror however seeing a festive happy scenery it keeps them in some what illusion and builds upon the tension then drops it and then builds it up again which shows a unique selling point, where as the USP for the first one is completely different, targeting a different audience and a different purpose.

Advertisement/marketing methods:
an advertisement is any piece of work which promotes a product, brand or service in order to attract potential customer. advertisements are very important for rapid growth and reaching to audiences without advertisement businesses and other products and brands wont be recognised outside their communal areas such as hip hop lovers won't have an interest in grime for the core reason of a lack of promotion and interest for that genre however with advertisement you can see small clips or posters of music to listen to. advertisement examples: posters, tv ads, sponsored videos, banners, etc.
Types of advertisement:
in app ads- in app ads can range from multiple methods such as videos, text, banners, push notification. in app ads are often very short between 10-15 sec this is very useful for promotion as it reaches a high audience with a method fairly easy to access.
banner ads- banner ads display an image and wit for users to view, click and convert- this limits how many people interact with the banner however those who interact have an interest in what they saw through the image.
interstitial ads- these are similar to banner ads however they take up the whole screen to avoid banner blindness which is simply when you get used to banner ads that you completely ignore it.
native ads- native ads are designed for specific environment in which they are placed. these could be sponsored videos in youtube as its an ad sponsored on a particular platform.
video ads- these are ads in video format. video ads are particularly very popular to use as they are highly engaging and interactive with a high click rate.
playable ads- these are ads that allow its audiences to interact with the ad such as a gamplay, playable ads let you try before you buy which offer highlights that should push users to install or watch etc.
ive had a 1-1 meeting with my tutor paul regarding my choice of marketing for my fmp. we had this face to face as we discussed possible choices i could create and how successful it maybe or unsuccessful. i felt this was useful as it got me thinking about what i could do to better my marketing strategy and how likely is it to work. ive noticed that pauls 1-1s have always been a great support to my work and a help to any qiestions i have had aling the way. paul also gave me some feedback on my poster analysis and gave some tips on what to look for in my poster such as how some text is larger than others for emphasis etc. overall this 1-1 was proven to be great in relation to my marketing and advertisment choices.

This poster is a very detailed yet simple poster for the upcoming film black adam. this poster favoritieses the iconography convention as we see that the aspect that stands out of this poster is the thunder/lightning symbol in bright yellow. this suggest a link to the DC movie shazam however juxtaposing the two shazam has a bright colour pallet where as black adam has a more toned , shadowy and dark colour pallet. the colours black, grey and yellow can suggest multiple things few implications of grey are loss, depression a more darker grey can suggest strength and mystery. the colour black can also suggest mystery, power, strength, fear, etc. this colour being a very symbolic and frequently used colour in black adam could connote to the story having a mysterious dark side which will promote your audience to watch it. the final colour yellow symbolises energy, hope, optimism as well as jealousy, betrayal, danger, etc. these all suggest multiple themes and emotions of black adam all in one poster which is generally the first impression. this is something i'll most certainly keep in consideration when making my poster. in consideration to the whole poster we can see that the main character is positioned in the center in an overpowering stance with a city in the background which looks isolated and gloomy. the general text is very intereling with the title of the film in a transparent metallic block font and a bright lightning symbol fitted perfectly in the center of Adam. the starring actors name at the very top which is a form of promotion as people who light the actors acting will want to watch his upcoming film. as well as other details such as age restriction, production company name, minor disclaimers etc.
Auteur theory: (audience research)
films directors that have influenced my idea for a horror film of this choice with the serial killer being the antagonist and tension build up are the following.

wes craven- an American director , screen writer and producer. he is recognised among one of the best horror movie directors famously recognized for his collectives of the movie scream. i believe he has influenced my idea for my short film from his most famous scream as this was a very intriguing narrative as well as fit for its purpose of being a thriller crime, horror genre. scream influences my work a-lot as my film is a shortened version of this with a few adjustments and improvisation but the concept of the serial killer on the loose and going on a rampage killing anyone who crosses his path is very similar to scream as we see that the killer is seen doing the exact same with a symbolic weapon in this case the knife. i like the way wes has structured the jump scare and very closely looked into the details of each scene as the general narrative is very simple and short with a killer going out and killing people for an unknown reason. this is generally a hard process to stretch out a small narrative into a whole 1hr 20min movie.
this short film influenced partial areas of my fmp. i really liked the way the structure was formed and that it's the most recognisable part throughout the film however that won't be something i want to use as it will take a-lot more time and is something i'm not sure how successful it is however i will be using the parts such as the jump scare was a part that i'm definitely going to use to make the horror effect reach a peak and then drops. i like the way the music is changed as the visuals change which gives it a very realistic touch to it as well as narratively it fits perfectly as the cliche sounds come first in place and then slowly drops lower gradually and then the jump scare. the main reason i like this jumpscare technique is it owers the tension and then spikes it up with a jump scare and then brings it back down and repeats the process until a chosen ending.
Professional screenwriting
scene heading- AKA the slug line. this gives the basic description of the scene using the following elements.
interior/exterior- is the scene indoors or outdoors (int., ext.)
location- where is the scene taking place (kitchen, park)
day/night- when is the scene taking place
moving/stationary- optional depending on where the characters are in the scene
Action- this shows what's happening in the scene. what is movements or expressions are the characters showing. any new characters being introduced any new theme or what emotion are you building up.
character- this should be named in capital letters
dialogue- when using dialogue you can alter the way your character will speak and act. you also have dialogues through: voice over (V.O), off screen (O.S), continued(Cont.)
parentheticals- this adds more depth into your script. this allows your actors to have some stage direction and/or improve their tone of voice to match up the actors performance such as if the actor needs to grunt or act aggressively you would include this within the parentheticals
Censorship
censor is to analyse any unacceptable parts of a film, show, video, etc.
censorship can be anything some examples are, beeps, cutouts of audio/visuals, blurs, etc. these all prevent inappropriate language or behaviour being present in a piece of media.
to censor out audio go to the audio and unlink the audio from the visuals. then cut out the part you want censored and remove this from the audio. go to google and look up for a bleep sound to bleep out the audio and fit that into the audio and then you could choose to link it or leave it like so and that is it also you may choose to lower the volume of the bleep and that is the audio censored.
i'll be using censorship in my fmp. some places i have in mind are beeping out swear words, blurring out licence plates and there maybe some more as i go along which is why i decided to watch a video on how to blur out on premiere pro
viewer discretion is also a way to avoid the editing and censoring part as this makes your audience aware of what they are about to view and stops them from having any issues later. viewer discretion is a warning in clear text before the film or media work is played of what might not be so appropriate for some viewers. i'm planning on using both censorship and viewer discretion to avoid the promotion of bad language and for college standards as well as show what i've learnt so far with my previous projects.
The viewer discretion has to be as clear and simple as possible with the colours being simple and not too complex such as the warning or viewer discretion name at the top in a red colour as this will trigger the attention of your viewers and will bring the focus to the title and then they would continue reading through the normal white coloured text this way you limit people not seeing the viewer discretion. the text font should also be as simple as possible as if it's too complicated it could mean its less effective as people won't be able to read it and understand what is being warned.
To create the viewer discretion you simply keep a small space in the start before or after your title to start typing. type viewer discretion or warning and enlarge that to be at the top of the frame then highlight that altering the font or possibly keeping it the same and change the colour possibly red for attention. then create a different type box and type in what you want to warn your audience about such as bad language, or violence. as an extra you could include include a rating for your film and position that in a corner or in the center above your text.
The clip below goes through step by step of how to blur using the gaussian blur effect which i used. the practical method when put to action is very simple and fast to work with and can be used in stop frame motion meaning while the subject is moving.
Target Audience
my target audience will not be focused on any specific gender or specific backgrounds which will give me a chance to reach out to wider audience. having no specific limits and specified genre to view the film increases the possibilities of other genders, ages, ethnicities to view it whether they are recommended or have somewhat of an interest.
My USP is the limited amount of dialogue and varying tension and horror build up which will make my audience think the story is over however the tension increases once again making the changing tension and keeping my audience gripped until the end. As far as my research has gone their are similar movies like scream however that's a little too extended for my liking and too much of a chasing kill where as mine is going to be focused on a short scary film with a limit of the killer looking stupid and wondering around but a more planned attack leading to other situations
